On the Nose Wednesday March 14
Over a few beers, followed by a few beers and some good red wine I recently enjoyed a lively (and loud) discussion about which region produced our best charddy. Being a loyal Taswegian, I punted somewhat vociferously (others say), for the Apple Isle, where my nomination for the proposed blind tasting was the glorious product of the Freycinet wine company, made by the magnificent Italian descendent, Claudio Randenti; I could equally have nominated half a dozen more. Given that this debate (to be very generous) took place in Melbourne, there was strong support for both the Yarra Valley (de Bortoli, TarraWarra Reserve, Oakridge and Domaine Chandon) and the Mornington Peninsula (Willow Creek, Stonier’s Reserve) one brave soul nominated the Macedon Ranges because of the stunning ’09 Curly Flat version.
The more traditional regions of the Hunter Valley (Tyrrells, Pooles Rock) and Margaret River (Voyager, Cape Mentelle, Leuwin Prelude and Moss Wood) are now being challenged by a number of wines from the Adelaide Hills (Shaw & Smith M3, Honey Moon) and, some say, by Rick Krinzbrunners’ Giaconda from Beechworth.
It was at this point that the discussion faltered, due primarily to the intense scrutiny of the rather large lunch bill. The meeting adjourned to a time and venue to be nominated for the tasting. Let’s hope the participants remember to bring their nominated wine(s). It should be a most enjoyable experience!! A full report will be posted shortly after.
